Why is Donating Blood so Important?

“The blood you donate is a life-chance for someone else who might need a transfusion, whether it's an emergency or out of necessity in your long term treatments”.
How often you can donate blood?
  • Men between 18 and 30 years old, every 4 months.
  • Men older than 30, every 3 months.
  • Women between 18 and 30 years old, every 6 months.
  • Women older than 30, every 4 months.
Remember, you should NOT give blood, if:
  • You've had some biological hazard accidents in the last year.
  • You have or have had Leishmaniasis.
  • You have been bitten by or had contact with kissing bugs.
  • You have underlying medical condition/disease such as diabetes, heart problems, epilepsy, cancer, among others.
  • You are pregnant, breastfeeding or have had a curettage or abortion in the last 12 months.
Why should I donate blood?
  • Approximately 1000 donors are needed monthly to support the needs of our patients.
  • About 400 donors per month must be from specialized processes, such as donating platelets to meet the requests of oncology patients.
  • Every month 500 people have to be first-time donors to cover those who couldn't donate in the previous period.
  • 3,000 people are needed every six months to donate because of their rare blood group, such as "O Negative".
Who can give blood?
Most people can donate blood, if:
  • Have a lifestyle with healthy habits.
  • They weigh more than 50 kg.
  • They are between 18 and 64 years old.
  • No tattoos or piercings for less than 1 year.
